Joan Prior Awards 2023

Entries closed on 17 September for the 2023 Joan Prior Young Performers Award, offered by Acoustic Routes (The Wellington Folk Centre) to support young performers aged from 18 to 25 years. We look forward to seeing the entrants perform at the Young Performers concert at Wellyfest!

Acoustic Routes (The Wellington Folk Centre) offers The Joan Prior Young Performers Award annually to singers and musicians aged 18-25 on 30 September 2023, in memory of Joan Prior, who inspired generations of folk singers, musicians and dancers around Wellington from the 1950s.

ABOUT THE AWARD

The award is open to singers and instrumentalists who are performers of traditional, contemporary or original material, living in the wider Wellington region. Applicants can be a solo performer, or a duo or trio. All genres of music are acceptable. As a general guide, that includes the wide variety of mainly acoustic music performed at folk festivals. Up to seven applicants (depending on the number of performers in each act) will be offered full weekend passes to Wellington Folk Festival. They will feature in a Young Performers concert at Wellyfest.

Following the Festival, the JPA winners will appear in a special Young Performers Showcase at the Moon Bar in Newtown, on Sunday, November 5. It will be hosted by Don Mackay, who runs the popular Songwriter concerts there.

Full details of the Joan Prior Award are on the Acoustic Routes website www.acousticroutes.org.nz.
